Mrs Mills and Mrs Best attended the Sheffield Leaders Awards 2019 last night to see Laura Masuku receive her Primary Engineer Leaders Award. She was one of 16 winners chosen from over 3000 designs sent in from the Yorkshire and Humber Region. Her design was a ‘Litre Bottle Alarm’ that would notify people if you have not drunk enough water during the day and remind you to keep drinking. The award ceremony took place at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and the awards were presented by Dr Rahul Mandal, who was also the winner of the Great British Bake Off in 2018.

The Leaders Award has been developed to help teachers promote STEM and also innovative thinking, teaching and problem finding with children and to help inspiring future engineers. It was wonderful to see all of the winning designs and also some of the highly recommended designs, one of which was by Jaroslava Horvathova whose design of a solar panelled hearing aid really excited the judging panel. We would like to congratulate all of the children who took part and look forward to presenting their certificates. Our thanks also goes to Jaguar Landrover for the support they provided in helping our children understand the role of an engineer and inspiring our children. As a school we have really enjoyed all the opportunities our Aspirations Project has provided for the children and would also like to thank Nathan Ray and his engineers from NIKKEN who also helped to develop our engagement in STEM.
